Mum's plea to drivers after son's horror smash

A DELAN mother received a heart-stopping call no parent wants to hear and now she has an important message for motorists everywhere.

Ninteen-year-old Shaun Cornell-Carter was driving his mum's Suzuki Swift down Tirroan Rd on Sunday night when he crashed.

His mother Tammy Bradfield explained the terrifying incident.

"He reached across to the passenger side of the car to pick up something that fell off the dash, he hit the curb and lost control," she said.

"A simple distraction caused the accident."

The car rolled and ended up on the side of Tirroan Rd between Tirroan and Gin Gin.

Shaun was the only person in the car that night and was lucky not to be injured.

"He was very lucky," Ms Bradfield said.

He was taken to Gin Gin Hospital as a precaution for minor injuries - he had a small cut to his wrist.

"This could have been so much worse," his mother said.

She hopes that her son's mistake will help spread an important message to the community.

"Be careful of distractions," she said.

"Reaching to pick up something or changing music or answering a phone are all distractions.

"And thank God for seatbelts and airbags."

She said she'd like to thank everyone who stopped to make sure her son was okay, especially passers-by Jacqui and Abby who called 000 and stayed with Shaun until help arrived.

Ms Bradfield said that Shaun was stiff and sore the next morning but thankfully, he seemed fine.

She said he had borrowed her car that night as his own had recently broken down.

The car was uninsured at the time of the incident.
